I grabbed this one mostly because the cover art reminded me of the cover art for 'The High King's Golden Tongue' but this one surpassed that one on my favorite books list for several reasons! This is not the first book by this author where the characters have arranged marriage, and find respect and love in it - this however is the first book where while I completely believe that the men are suited to each other and I am sure became good friends, I just did not feel much chemistry from them. It is well done, fast paced, makes you glued to the pages, but I am kind of puzzled about romance. I guess the book is technically a fantasy, because the world is fictitious and there are dragons present as pets in one of the countries, but otherwise I would just characterize it as a political thriller with a love story thrown in and be done with it. It made sense of course, because political games, betrayal, terrorism are at the front and center of the plot and I think this is the first book by this author where politics felt so merciless and cold and that is why so real to me. I expected to see the pragmatic characters who rarely wallow in self pity despite dealing with tough circumstances (and if they are at a breaking point for a page or so, you can be assured that there is a very good reason for that), but boy I did not expect to see them being *that* pragmatic. I buy pretty much every novel by this author, so I had to get this one.

After Barks's death at the age of ninety-nine, Roy Disney praised him for his "brilliant artistic vision." Carl Barks: Conversations is the only comprehensive collection of Barks's interviews. The influence of Barks's work on such filmmakers as George Lucas and Steven Spielberg and on such artists as Gottfried Helnwein has extended Barks's significance far beyond the boundaries of comics. He is the only comic book artist ever to receive a Disney Legends award. He created work of such exceptional quality that he was accorded the greatest autonomy of any Disney artist. Although the images he created are known virtually everywhere, Barks was an isolated storyteller, living in the desert of California and preferring to labor without public fanfare during most of his career. His work is ranked among the most widely circulated, best-loved, and most influential of all comic book art. Barks also produced more than 500 comic book stories. One of the workers in the shop submitted a letter to the comic that was posted in the 7th issue I believe, and he mentioned me (although the spelling of my name was butchered).Īnd if you know your history of the book, the cover of the collected edition makes so much sense and makes this tomb all the more personal. I originally saw a blurb for it in Wizard Magazine prior to its release, and I asked the Fantasy Comics in Tucson (where I got my comics at that time) to order the series for me. This is easily my favorite comic book story of all time. How could you go wrong? The answer, you can't. I get goosebumps every time I read that scene. Plus one of the most endearing kick-ass heroines in history, mixed with a phenomenal depiction of modern feminist love ever. And c'mon, it's titled after one of the Misfits earliest singles. However, this becomes the ‘tree of life’ at the end of the narrative. God originally tells Adam not to eat of the tree of knowledge (i.e., knowledge of good and evil), but every other tree is fine to eat from. And that was it: it was pack your bags time, and don’t slam the garden gate on your way out.īut which tree did Adam and Eve eat from? There is an inconsistency in the Genesis narrative. The way the writers of the Genesis story solve this problem, of course, is by presenting a narrative in which God initially did shelter his creation from these hardships, until humankind showed itself untrustworthy and ill-deserving of relief from these travails. But any God that allowed such things to afflict his people can’t be wholly good. Analysed this way, then, the Adam and Eve story is a kind of origin-myth for the hardships of the flesh: women’s pain in childbirth, man’s back-breaking toil in the field, the wife’s subjection to her husband. |
